From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Nationalism generally involves the identification of an ethnic identity with a state. The subject can include the belief that one's nation is of primary importance. It is also used to describe a movement to establish or protect a homeland (usually an autonomous state) for an ethnic group. In some cases the identification of a homogeneous national culture is combined with a negative view of other races of cultures. In former eras, people were generally loyal to a city or to a particular leader rather than to their nation. Encyclopedia Britannica identifies the movement's genesis with the late-18th century American Revolution and French Revolution; other historians point specifically to the ultra-nationalist party in France during the French Revolution. Nationalism is sometimes reactionary, calling for a return to an idealized version of the national past and sometimes for the expulsion of foreigners. Other forms of nationalism are revolutionary, calling for the establishment of an independent state as a homeland for an ethnic underclass. Nationalism emphasises collective identity - a 'people' must be autonomous, united, and express a single national culture. However, some nationalists stress individualism as an important part of their own national identity. From Wikipedia under the

Make it a layered cake, with each layer defining the political systems: World War One Causes The first world war began in August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip. This event was, however, simply the trigger that set off declarations of war. The actual causes of the war are more complicated and are still debated by historians today. I know that nationalism regards a nation and occultism some kind of spiritual entity, person, god...but what are other important differences and similarities? Kind of like, 'your fellow american' is a kind of very abstract, general idea. Not really this guy or that guy, not really anyone in specific, and yet, anyone. There is a good book called Imaginary Communities that about the sort of delusion of living in a community you have never seen. People have to BELIEVE that they are part of a nation in order for a nation to exist. And that's probably what an occultist might say about their own doctrine. In a way, a nation is hidden but everywhere. Interesting stuff to think about... Answered by albynovulture - Mon Nov 9 00:24:27 2009 What were the aims of nationalism in the 19th century?
